Basic Mom Week in Review - 04/03/16

5 Things That Actually Happened This Week and the Lessons I Learned

1. My 2-year-old had a meltdown because I told her that she couldn't play with my phone while we were at the park.

Lesson: I am a mean mom. Only mean moms seek out large playgrounds with varied and plentiful equipment and then force their children to actually play on it.

2. This scene at the playground:

[Giant animalistic ROARRR! that sounds suspiciously like my 2-year-old]

Me (turning to my friend and observing my 2-year-old between two older boys on an enclosed climbing part of the play structure): Was that her?

Friend: Yeah, but that boy had a stick and was wielding it at her, and that other boy was right behind her, so it was kind of justified.

Lesson: Sometimes when your kid roars at another kid it's embarrassing, but sometimes it's a proud parenting moment where you realize that your daughter is on her way to being prepared for the world.

3. While my family was collectively trying to remember whether a character in one of my daughters' shows had a broken arm or leg, my 7-year-old said,

"His leg is broken! He has clutches!"

Lesson: This is what men with broken legs look like:

4. We played a family game of hide-and-seek. My husband was irrationally shocked at how quickly I found him.

In the interest of full disclosure, I was also pretty disappointed at how quickly he found me in this genius hiding spot:

Lesson: We are bigger than we think we are.

5. I was struggling with what to include as my fifth "thing" this week. Then, yesterday afternoon, my 2-year-old started running a high fever and vomiting, which, so far, has resulted in two bedding changes, three baths, and one terrible night of sleep.

Lesson: I can always count on my 2-year-old for last-minute blog inspiration.
