Basic Mom Week in Review - 11/05/17
/5 Things That Actually Happened This Week and the Lessons I Learned
1. While in a gift shop, my 4-year-old picked up a stone (from a treasure chest filled with stones for sale) and said, "Can I take this home? Because this sign says, 'Take one home.'"
Lesson: Well, I guess I don't have to worry about my 4-year-old being some sort of reading prodigy. A thief, maybe, but not a reading prodigy.
2. My 4-year-old and I went birthday shopping for my husband, wherein we purchased a camel-colored cardigan per his request. I told her to keep our shopping trip a secret. We had been home for about 3 minutes when she pointed to my husband and said,
"Look, he's wearing a camel-colored sweater!"
Lesson: A secret birthday shopping trip is not the best time to teach a young child a new color - particularly when the future gift recipient happens to be wearing the new color the very next time the young child sees him.
3. My 4-year-old refused to put on her shoes because she was mad that her "gray shoes aren't red," despite the fact that she's had her gray shoes for months and they have always been gray.
Lesson: If you remind your child that the shoes have always been gray and that she said she loved them and would wear them when you bought them, it will only result in her breaking down into sobs and yelling desperately, "But I wish they were red!"
4. This interaction while my husband and I were joking about who loves my 4-year-old more:
Me: I love her!
Husband: No, I love her!
Me: No, I love her!
4-Year-Old: No . . . I love Hamilton.
Lesson: I guess that's fair.
5. I caught my children playing fetch. It's the nicest they have played together in weeks.
Lesson: If it takes my 8-year-old treating my 4-year-old like a literal dog for them to get along, who am I to judge?
